Mastering the Art of Homemade Pav Bread: A Step-by-Step Guide
Pav bread, also known as "pav" or "pao," is a soft and fluffy bread that hails from India and is an essential accompaniment to many beloved dishes like pav bhaji and vada pav. While store-bought pav bread is readily available, there's something special about the aroma and taste of freshly baked homemade pav bread. In this article, we'll guide you through the process of making your own batch of pav bread from scratch.
Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
In a mixing bowl, pour the lukewarm milk and sprinkle the instant yeast over it.
Give it a gentle stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast becomes frothy.
2. Mix the Dough:
Once the yeast is activated, add the flour, sugar, salt, milk powder, and melted butter into the bowl.
Mix everything together until it forms a rough dough.
3. Knead the Dough:
Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Shape the dough into a ball.
4. First Rise:
Place the dough ball back into the mixing bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel.
Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it doubles in size.
5. Shape the Dough:
After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air.
Divide the dough into equal-sized portions and shape them into smooth balls.
Place the dough balls onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
6. Second Rise:
Cover the dough balls with a kitchen towel and let them rest for another 30 minutes.
7. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
8. Brush with Butter:
Before baking, brush the tops of the dough balls with melted butter.
9. Bake:
Place the baking tray in the preheated oven and bake the pav bread for about 15-20 minutes or until they're golden brown on top.
10. Cool and Serve:
Once baked, remove the pav bread from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.
Serve the pav bread warm or at room temperature with your favorite dishes or spreads.
